Stem Cells Know Where They Want To Go
Human stem cells have the ability to become any cell type in the human body, but when it comes to their destination they know where they want to go.
In a paper published in the scientific journal Cell Stem Cell, Mick Bhatia, director of the McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute, led a team of investigators to discover the molecular underpinnings of how human pluripotent stem cells make decisions. Pluripotency is the ability of stem cells to turn into any one of the 226 cell types that make up the human body.

Dr. Mick Bhatia recognized as Innovator of the Year
Dr. Mick Bhatia was recognized as Innovator of the Year at the McMaster Innovator Awards. Dr. Bhatia was recognized for the discovery of how to make human blood from adult human skin. The Institute has begun working to commercialize this discovery, so that medical doctors can use it to treat their patients.

Dr. Mick Bhatia awarded $423,000 by Canadian Cancer Society
Dr. Mick Bhatia's lab continues its groundbreaking research turning adult skin into human stem cells to generate different types of blood cells. This study aims to identify the molecules required for reprogramming these cells, focusing on the Gil3 gene. The goal is to create an unlimited source of blood for cancer patients requiring bone marrow transplants to fight the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

McMaster scientists turn skin into blood
In an important breakthrough, scientists at McMaster University have discovered how to make human blood from adult human skin. The discovery, published in the prestigious science journal Nature today, could mean that in the foreseeable future people needing blood for surgery, cancer treatment or treatment of other blood conditions like anemia will be able to have blood created from a patch of their own skin to provide transfusions. Clinical trials could begin as soon as 2012.
Skin to blood discovey met with enthusiasm
Response to the discovery of the ability to turn human skin into human blood has been enthusiastic. The breakthrough by McMaster University scientists was published in the science journal Nature on Nov. 7.

Not All Stem Cells The Same
SCC-RI researchers have discovered that there are subsets of stem cells that respond differently depending on what stem cell properties are measured and what test is used.
